CDSCO in its latest announcement of results of its regular medical sample tests, has flagged a total of 46 items as banned. Central Drugs Standard Control is a regulatory body to test and approve drugs for consumption, sale, manufacturing and import in India. In its recent test of total 932 samples it found 46 items as unsatisfactory, therefore marked them as ‘Not of Standard quality’. The list contains some big names as well like Jpee Drugs, Unimark, Sun Pharma and Zee laboratories. Some main reasons for failure include Discription & Particulate Matter, pH, Diameter, length and Weight per ml.

About CDSCO-
Central Drugs Standard Conrol organisation was established in 1968 in Chennai under Drugs and Cosmetics Act,1940. Currently it’s a fully functional government regulatory body which is headed by DCGI (Drugs Controller General of India). It comes under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. there are two advisory bodies namely DCC (Drug Consultative Body) and DTAB (Drug Technical Advisory Board). Operates through its 9 zonal offices , 7 sub-zonal Offices, 18 port offices and many AIRs(Authorized Indian Representatives). AIRs are the manufacturers representatives to carry out dealing with CDSCO.
There are 8 divisions namely BA/BE, New Drugs division, Medical Device &Diagnostics, DCC-DTAB, Import & Registration, Biological, Cosmetics, Clinical Trials. All are available online on the official website of CDSCO.
Functions of CDSCO:
- To participate in the joint inspection for issuance / revalidation of Certificate of Pharmaceutical Products (COPPs) as per WHO certification scheme after receiving the application from the manufacturing firm.
- To participate in the joint inspection for grant/renewal of Blood Bank license.
- To participate in the joint inspection for grant/renewal of license for Vaccine / Sera manufacturing units for both human as well as veterinary.
- To participate in the joint inspection for grant/renewal of license for LVP manufacturing units.
- To carry out Surprise check/Raid jointly/independently on the basis of
- Also, complaint received under Whistle Blower scheme including also from other sources.
- To carry out joint inspection of Drug Testing Laboratory occasionally for the purpose of grant of approval for test / analysis of Drugs & Cosmetics.
- To follow up action on NSQ drugs with State Licensing Authorities in the respective zone as well as with other zonal offices.
- Drawing of Legal and Survey samples of drugs, cosmetics and medical devices from the manufacturing & sales / distribution premises including the Govt. establishment.
- To organise workshop, seminar etc. as directed.
